My Favorite Setting Powders & Tips For Avoiding Cake Face

Hey Guys,

So today I thought Id talk a little bit about setting powders (in the context of using a liquid base). Setting powders do wonders, they can help set your cream under eye concealer so it doesn’t crease, it can help with oil and shine control, give a radiant look to the skin, and it can help prolong your foundation and make up. The following products are some of my favorite setting powders with rather varying finishes and purposes.

IMG_9514For shine control and longevity look for a transparent powder like the Make Up For Ever HD Powder. This particular translucent powder works on all skin tones, sets the make up for maximum longevity, and does an amazing job at shine control. Not to mention this product looks amazing in pictures and on camera by controlling the white cast that can appear  in photos.

Favorite_longwear_beauty_products_MUFE_HDPowderAnother great powder to get you camera ready is the Urban Decay Razor Sharp Ultra Definition Translucent Setting Powder. The finish on this is a little less matteifying then the MUFE HD powder and has more of a skin like quality. It doesn’t create flash back and makes the skin glow in a natural way. Love this product but definitely don’t care for the packaging. The sponge is super annoying and impracticable, I just take it off when in use and replace when its stored away to avoid a loose powder catastrophe. (side note: I wouldn’t recommend this product to dark skinned guys and gals as it does have a light flesh tone color, which may create an ashy appearance).

UrbanDecay_razorSharpUltraDefintion_finishingPowderThe Ben Nye Translucent Face Powder in Fair is a wonderful setting powder for the under eye area. Its almost translucent but has a slight pale-pink tone to help brighten under the eye area (Its like the Banana Powder for light skinned folks!!). It doesn’t cake up or dry the area and helps my concealer be crease free all day long.

bennye_facepowderIf your not worried about flash back in photos and your going for a more natural look then I highly recommend the Mac Mineralized Skin Finishes. The finish of this product is gorgeous, it makes the skin look so radiant and fresh. It helps my make up last and helps with minimal shine control without completely mattifying the face. Plus the shade range is extensive. I like to use it either to set my foundation and to add a bit more coverage (as its not translucent yet is on the sheer side) or in the summer on its own just to create a fresh and even skin tone. It lasts all day long and never fails.

Mac_MSFAnother similar product is the Mac Select Sheer Loose Powder. It has the same type of light reflecting properties but also does a slightly better job at oil control. There is a small shade range but due to its sheer nature the possibility of finding the right shade is high. The only down side is that its loose and thus prone to making a mess.

mac_selectSheerLossePowderThings To Keep In Mind When Working With Setting Powder:

  1. When applying powder remember to tap the brush to remove excess product. Its better to apply thin layers and easier to correct then applying too much!
  2. Use a light hand and a large fluffy brush to disperse a sheer wash of product (the denser the brush the more product transferred onto the skin!!). This will help avoid and/or minimize the chance of cake face.
  3. When applying powder try to push the brush and product into the skin, rather than swiping, to avoid moving or disturbing the make up underneath. Another option is to use a large fan brush or a powder puff to roll product onto the skin to minimize disturbance.
  4. Use a setting spray, whether for oil control or dewyness, to further set make up and to sheer down powder if you accidentally went over board.
  5. If you lean more towards oily skinned avoid heavy dewy or light reflecting powders whereas my dry skinned girls should go for the opposite.
  6. When choosing setting powder consider what you want it to do as well as your skin type and shade: are you looking to look flawless on camera, control oil, maximize longevity or all of the above?

I love all these powders for different reasons but one thing they have in common is their ability to stand up to their individual claims and their ability to adapt to skin for a flawless long lasting finish. What do you guys think, are any of these your favorites too?

September Favorites

Hey guys,

I have a bunch of fun beauty favorites to share with you. Since the beginning of September I’ve been busting out a bunch of oldies from my stash and adding a few new ones as well 😀 These are the bad boys I’ve been reaching for almost on the daily this past month!!

September_FavoritesNow that my tan has faded I’ve put away my darker shades and pulled out some of my lighter ones. I’m absolutely in love with the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I love the satin finish and the light to medium coverage. It really looks natural and lasts a super long time.

September_Favorites_GeorgiArmani_LuminiousSilkFoundationTo set my foundation I’ve been using my beloved Make Up For Ever HD Powder. I haven’t used it in a while and almost forgot how amazing it is for longevity and oil control. I’m on the dry side so I have to be super light handed with this guy but it sure does the trick!!

September_Favorites_MUFE_HDPowdeWhen I heard Benefit was launching a new Box Powder, the Rockateur, I was stalking the poor girls at Sephora so badly asking if they’d received it yet!! Lol!! Well once I got my hands on it I haven’t been able to put it down. I’m loving it so much. It gives a gorgeous light and pinky glow to the cheeks. It looks super frosted in the box but it translates so softly. You can even use it on the cheek bones as a super natural highlight.

September_Favorites_Benefit_RockateurI’m obsessed with contouring. I don’t think I go a day without trying to define my cheekbones so I’m always trying out new matte bronzers. My absolute favorite one at the moment is TheBalm Hot Mama. Its a nice cool toned brown with a slight hint of taupe/greyish undertones so it doesn’t look muddy on the face. The texture is amazing and so is the longevity. Its pretty pigmented so a little bit goes a long way with this one.

September_Favorites_TheBalm_HotMamaI recently uploaded a new post on my favorite green eyeliners for fall (here). Well surprise surprise that one of them ends up in my monthly favorites. Its the L’Oreal Color Riche Le Smokey in 209 Antique Green. This has been one of my go to products for a quick easy make up look. I add this to my waterline and some mascara and boom out the door. The rich jewel tone shade is absolutely gorgeous and bang on trend.

favorite_green_eyeliners_lorealI’ve been busting out all my berry and red lip products for fall. Benefit’s Ultra Smooth Lip-Color in Talk Flirty has been my everyday shade. It’s a soft berry pink shade and it’s a sheer way to rock a more autumnal lip. Check here for a detailed review.

Benefit_Ultra-SmoothLipColor_TalkFlirtyAnd of course I’ve been whipping out the one and only Rebel Satin Lipstick from Mac. Need I say more about this fantastic shade. Its vibrant yet dark and lasts so long leaving behind a beautiful stain.

September_Favorites_MacRebel_LipstickWell guys and dolls those were my most used and loved products for the month of September. What were some of yours?

Review: Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer Gradual Self Tanner

Hey guys,

So it’s summer and I just love having a tan, it really boosts my confidence and can even make me look a little more toned! Lol!! I’ve been a lot more conscious over the last few years in terms of sun exposure, especially since I noticed some tiny fine lines on my for head!! We all know how bad it is for your skin to spend day after day baking in the sun. Sure there’s the risk of skin cancer but also aesthetic damage to the skin. Over exposure to UV-A and B rays can lead to dark spots, it can also enhance and increase fine lines and wrinkles. Of course Vitamin D the old fashion way is great for the skin and everyone looks a little fresher but hours on end for weeks on end can really take a tole not only on skin but hair too.

So I’ve decided to try out some self tanners instead of baking my skin in the sun and I thought I’d review the Jergens Natural Glow for you guys. I Purchased the Natural Glow +Firming Daily Moisturizer in Medium to Tan Skin Tones ($10.49) as well as the Natural Glow Face Daily Moisturizer SPF 20 for Medium to Tan Skin Tones ($8.49). They can be purchased in the US at your local drug store or on Amazon for all my international gals and dolls.

Jergens_NaturalGlow_SelfTanSo I’ve heard a lot about the Jergens gradual tanners but haven’t really heard about the Natural Glow Face Moisturizer with SPF 20. So I picked it up to give it a try along with the body moisturizer.

According to Jergens

“Jergens® Natural Glow FACE Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 20 gradually creates fabulous, natural-looking color with a subtle skin darkening complex. Specially formulated for your face. This advanced formula contains SPF 20 to help defend against the effects of everyday sun exposure.

  • Dermatologist-tested and oil-free
  • Lightweight formula
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Works great with any Jergens® Natural Glow Moisturizer for the body”

I was disappointed with this product. I saw a very gradual (shall I say super slow and minimal color) tan occurring but no where near the speed or darkness of the body version (review below). Plus it made my skin breakout. The smell isn’t very pleasant either.

4/10. Unfortunately this product just didn’t deliver. No color payoff, awkward smell and gave me breakouts! OK, so it has SPF 20 in it which is great but nothing amazing! The formula was light weight but I noticed it made my skin feel sweaty around the nose area… I hate that feeling!!

Luckily the body version was a different story….

Jergens_NaturalGlow_BodyAccording to Jergens:

“Jergens® Natural Glow +FIRMING Daily Moisturizer gradually creates fabulous natural-looking color with a subtle skin-darkening complex. In as little as 7 days you’ll experience visibly firmer skin with less noticeable cellulite and improved elasticity.

  • Clinically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite in as little as 7 days
  • No sunless tanner odor”

I decided to grab the medium to tan skin tones, I guess I would be considered light but I already had a bit of a tan and really wanted to see how the darkest would develop. It was easy to apply and streak free. The texture felt just like a normal body moisturizer.

It definitely gave me an amazing tan…in 3 days of consecutive applications I already noticed a nice tan developing and after 7 days I had a really nice dark tan. It wasn’t orange or muddy looking either so I was pleasantly surprised.

I stopped application on the 7th day to test how it faded. It took about three days to start fading but when it did it was really blotchy. It took me two showers and major scrubbing to get it almost completely off and I still see some coming off on my towel (4th shower since fading began)

As for the firming and cellulite reducing capabilities, I saw none of that to be honest. Sure I may have looked a bit more toned but that’s just because the tan hides the imperfections!! As for the odor…well when you first apply it, it smells ok, nothing fancy but nothing bothersome. After an hour or so I definitely smelt that fake tan odor…and it totally lingered all day. So that was a total turn off and a complete let down :(

7/10. Overall this product is pretty decent. For a gradual self tanner the color develops within a few days and you do achieve a nice summer tan especially for light/medium skin tones. The odor really put me off, so did the blochiness when it faded.  I would recommend this for those of you who may be new at self tanning or looking for a gradual formula.

Too be completely honest this is not my preferred way to get that gorgeous bronzed goddess summer skin. I prefer the fast activating-over-night-style self tanners where you wash off the color guard in the shower the following day like the ones available from St.Tropez or Fake Bake.

FakeBake_SelfTanI was testing the Fake Bake self tanner before the Jergens and I totally loved it. You put it on at night, wash it off in the morning and you have a streak free gorgeous tan. You can even use it on your face which is a bonus. It lasts a week and the fading is so subtle. Its just an amazing product.

There are so many self tanning products out there to try….Whats your favorite self tan product? I really want to try the Tarte Maracuja Self Tanner…Have any of you tried it? I heard its pretty amazing!!
