My Top Tips and Favorite Products for Dry Skin

Hey guys and dolls,

So autumn is rolling in, at least that’s the case here in Copenhagen…the temperature is lower and there’s plenty of humidity in the air. As the days get darker and colder here in the Scandinavian north my combination skin becomes extremely dry and patchy. So I thought I would share some of my top tips for creating a flawless face on dry skin and some of my favorite products to achieve that dewy, radiant and smooth complexion.

Cleansing:

First and foremost if you have dry skin and patchy areas, (I’m sure you’ve experienced that annoying tendency for your foundation to cling to those areas and actually make them stand out), exfoliation will be your best friend. Before applying makeup use a wash cloth, exfoliating product or Clarasonic to lightly exfoliate the skin to remove dry patches and smooth the skin about once a week. Don’t over exfoliate or use super harsh products as this can actually dry the skin out and make it more prone to irritation and redness.

clarasonicPrepping:

Prepping the skin is super important too. Using a hydrating toner has really great skin care benefits and does wonders on dry patchy skin. Use a super hydrating serum and moisturizer with light infusing technology. Avoid products with alcohol in them as they not only dry the skin but increase sensitivity and redness. I’m absolutely loving the hydrating skin care line from Nars that comes with a Multi Action Hydrating Toner, Optimal Brightening Concentrate, Luminous Moisture Cream and Total Replenishing Eye Cream .

nars_SkinCareUse your favorite primer to help smooth the skins surface making a more neutral and blank canvas to work on. You can even get light infusing primers which are great for dry skin. Lots of brands have primers like this such as Laura Mercier, Urban Decay and Too Faced. Some of my favorites include the Urban Decay Brightening and Tightening Complexion Primer Potion and the L’oreal Lumi Magique Base.

Foundation:

Choosing the right foundation is also key to a smooth and perfect finish to the skin. I really like dewy and radiant products for my skin. These type of products work wonders on dry skin. Keep a look out for products using terms such as Radiant, Luminous, Naked. These type of products will most likely suit dry skin. I’m especially loving the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Its really expensive but its just so wow!! There are also lots of drugstore equivalents that do a great job like the L’oreal Lumi Magique. Here are some of my favorite foundations that work wonders on dry skin as they add moisture and radiance to otherwise dull dry skin: Urban Decay Naked Skin, Nars Sheer Glow, Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, and L’oreal Lumi Magique.

Another great way to get that lit from within glow and dewy complexion is to use cream blushes and highlighters. I love the cream blushes from TopShop, Stilla and Maybelline.

cream_blushTools:

Using the right tools and method of application is super important for those with dry skin. Avoid using a traditional paddle brush, buffing brushes, and stippling brushes as the movements with these type of brushes create micro exfoliation on the skin and thus creates an uneven and patchy surface. Instead try and use a damp cosmetic sponge. Ive tried all types of sponges but by far my favorite is the original Beauty Blender. This method is great for dry skin as you push the product against the skin and doesn’t disturb or enhance dry patches. It also absorbs excess product so you never look caked out 😀

beauty_blenderPowder:

Now lets talk about powder. If you like to set your foundation with powder for long lasting hold then use only minimal amounts of powder and try to apply powder only to the areas that really need it like the T zone as powder tends to dry the skin out. When applying powder avoid buffing it into the skin, rather push or roll the product into your skin to avoid disturbing it. This is also a great tip for all skin types as it doesn’t disrupt or move the foundation you applied.

Setting:

If you ever use too much powder, or your foundation is a bit on the dry side then use a few sprays of dewy setting spray like Mac’s Fix+. Not only will this type of product add moisture back into the skin and eliminate cake face it can also help in the longevity of your make up 😀

MacFix+Well those were my favorite products for dry skin and a few application tips. I’m always on the look out for great tips for dry skin as it can be difficult to handle so please leave a comment below if you have any great tips or product suggestions.

Whats In My Travel Make Up Bag

Hey beautiful people,

So summer is almost here and Uni is done so that means holidays and travel…whooopiiii 😀 I’m heading off tomorrow for a week to see my sister and then in mid June I will be in London for IMATS (OMG too excited for that!!!) and then off to sunny Cali to visit my parents and brother. So I thought I would share with you guys what make up I bring with me on holiday as well as how and what I pack it in. Lets just get straight in to it.

Makeup_Travel

Makeup_Travel_MUFEI pack most of my make up and skin care in the super great MUFE makeup bag. It’s really cool and holds loads of stuff. Unfortunately I don’t know if its available for purchase as I got it free at a MUFE event. Anyways here’s a little look of the inside…

Makeup_Travel_MUFE_OpenMakeup_Travel_MUFE_Compartment

It has loads of compartments. A mesh zipper area for flatter larger products and two removable plastic ‘pencil case’ type compartments. There’s also a compartment in the very front which I don’t really use for anything. Its a great bag, the removable compartments are basically waterproof and super easy to clean in case of spillage or leakage!!! Whats super cool about the plastic compartments: they’re detachable so you can choose to use all, one or none and its great for keeping everything organized.

Makeup_Travel_LargeMakeup_Travel_large_meshIn the mesh compartment I house most of the larger and fatter products like my Mac MSF in Soft and Gentle, Maybelline Fit me Powder in 125, Mini Daily Brush Cleanser from Sephora, and my Urban Decay Naked Palette.

Makeup_Travel_MUFE_makeupIn one of the plastic compartments I house most of my make up. So lip products like Too Faced Juicy Melons, Revlon Lip Butter in Sweet Tarte, Mac Lipglass in Betty Bright and NYX Mega Shine Lipgloss in Beige (even though its a dusty rose…but whatevs!!!) It also fits a mini Hourglass Primer, L’Oreal Lumi Primer, MUFE Brightening Concealer, Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 125, Too Faced Chocolate Soliel Bronzer, TheBalm Hot Mama Blush, MUFE HD Powder, Mac Paint Pot in Painterly, and two eyeliner pencils from MUFE in black and brown. I Think I will also pack a nude liner, perhaps my Tarte one but I haven’t decide yet 😀 I also haven’t decide on which mascara I should take or brow product…oh the difficulties of a a makeup addict!!! hahaha.

Makeup_Travel_MUFE_SkincareThe other plastic compartment houses my skin care stuff. I use a lot of mini and sample versions of products I already own. So I have a mini make up remover and toner from Sephora, my Josie Maran Argan Oil as my night ‘cream’, a mini Murad sample of there eye cream and daily moisturizer, and a mini Lancome Vissionaire as my serum. I also have my Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 125 and my Mac Fix+ to hydrate and and set my make up 😀

Makeup_Travel_BrushesMy makeup brushes travel in the Sigma holder which doubles as a stand which is super convenient and I add a few smaller brushes in my Too Faced travel brush container. Most of my brushes are protected with Brush Guards, it helps keep there shape too!!

Makeup_Travel_HairAnd lastly I keep all my hair care in this little black Chanel pouch. Again I have mini versions of my fave hair products like my Ouidad Serum Glaze, Aveda Be Curly and a little empty container that I filled with my Ouidad hair gel. I always take a mini of my favorite perfume Flower Bomb by Victor and Rolf.

After everything is packed and sealed I throw it in my suitcase and wedge it in between clothing for extra safety.

Tips for Packing Makeup:

  • Keep samples and ask for samples of your favorite products, they are perfect for travel as they take up very little space.
  • As an alternative to sample products, buy empty containers and fill them up with your fave products.
  • To prevent powders from shattering or breaking stick a little powder poof in your powder compacts, this will help avoid any cracks.
  • Wedge your make up bags in between clothing for extra cushioning (you no how those airport guys throw your bags around!!!)
  • If your extra paranoid about your eye shadows and palettes breaking then wrap them up in a pair of ankle warmers or a fluffy sweater.
  • If you have a really nice and expensive make up bag that you don’t want to ruin (lets face it things brake and spill!!) keep things in little plastic baggies. It contains the mess and makes it easy to clean 😀
  • Protect your makeup brushes by housing them in a separate compartment and use Brush Guards for shape and extra protection.

I hope this post has been helpful. If not I hope it’s been fun 😀 I know it was for me!!!

I would love to hear your packing tips so please do leave a comment with great suggestions on how to keep your make up safe during air travel 😀
